Nimma by the Sea

Animal species are dying out faster than ever, our earth is warming more and more, and ecosystems are increasingly losing their natural equilibrium. We have known this for a long time; these crises are not new phenomena. Individualism, the ideal of social engineering and the focus on quick results no longer seem sufficient to deal with these crises. Some critics argue that we should move toward collectivism, multi-generational thinking and a new era in which humans become part of nature again instead of placing themselves outside of it. In short, we must move toward the Symbiocene.

    General

The term Symbiocene was coined by Australian environmental philosopher Glenn Albrecht and means as much as a new era in which humans, nature and technology live together in balance and benefit from each other's existence. So that is almost the opposite of the current era, the Anthropocene, in which humans take center stage and assume mastery over both nature and technology.

    Client
Client of the think is LUX, film theatre Nijmegen. LUX organizes different types of programs under the banner of Nimma aan Zee (Nimma by the Sea). Art is at the heart of these programs which approach the topic of climate change from three different perspectives: indigenous perspectives, perspectives of future generations and perspectives of non-human entities.

    Assignment
The outcome of the think tank will include a programme in LUX, for example a conference to a play or short documentary made by you. The facilities and expertise in the field of program, production and art and culture of LUX are at the students' disposal (where possible).

For the end product you decide which facet of the Symbiocene you are going to focus on. For example, you can delve into different kinds of collaboration and relation with nature, new technologies in food industry, or the role of indigenous people’s perspectives Western society.

    Interactive experience

The students that participated in the Think Tank 'Nimma by the Sea' created an interactive experience called 'Sam’s Symbiodream', which was part of the Nimma aan Zee impact week curated by Arthouse LUX.
