Radboud Reflects - Jazz & Philosophy

Friday 20 October 2023, 8:30 pm - 9:30 pm

When jazz musicians start improvising, it sometimes seems like they are just messing around. But behind the flowing melodies lie tight rules within clear boundaries and following shared schedules. It is precisely through these frameworks that true freedom can exist. Together with cognitive philosopher Marc Slors, dive deeper into the comparison between jazz and society and listen to a sparkling jazz performance programmed by Jazzpodium Brebl.

Friday 20 October (8.30 pm) | Theater Hall C

Is there still a shared structure we build on as a society? Or is it slowly disappearing in a world full of information bubbles, echo chambers and elected communities? The freedom we seek in being able to form and express our opinions deteriorates into chaos if we do not also pay attention to our shared principles, says Marc Slors.

Come listen to a short lecture and discussion followed by a jazz concert and find out what we can learn from jazz as a metaphor for our complex society!

Radboud Art & Science Festival

This event is part of Radboud Art & Science. On 19, 20 and 21 October, immerse yourself in the world of art and science on the university campus.

Let yourself be transported to the past through music, film, and dance. Walk past photo exhibitions, light installations and visual art that give you a unique perspective of the campus. There will also be live concerts, performances, and interactive performances in unexpected places. In doing so, we delve into the university's heritage, history and day-to-day operations, and explore the stories of students, researchers and other staff.

Entrance to Radboud Art & Science is free and everyone is welcome. Will you be there?
