Overview of Conference Activities

Registration begins at 9:00 on Wednesday, November 1 in the landing area of the first floor of the Elinor Ostrom Building. All daytime panels and plenary sessions during the three days of the conference, including the NOSTER Masterclass, will take place in this building.

The conference begins with an opening session and welcome in Theaterzaal C, followed by the first Plenary Session. All the plenary sessions will take place in Theaterzaal C. Lunches and coffee breaks take place on the first floor landing area of the Elinor Ostrom Building. The panels themselves take place in various rooms in the building—please check the schedule for details.

On Wednesday evening, we invite you for dinner at De Hemel, an atmospheric restaurant in a historic building that once served as a pilgrims’ house. Following the reception, which will begin at 18:30, and dinner, a public event organized together with Radboud Reflects will take place at De Hemel at 20:00. On Thursday evening, we will return to De Hemel for dinner at 19:00. Travel from the University to De Hemel is easiest by bus or bike. Bus 15 will take you to the Waalkade, where you can walk up the hill to the restaurant, while several other buses will take you towards Nijmegen Centraal station and the Grote Markt. Conference organizers will be happy to help you get to the restaurant and several groups will travel together from the University.

After the closing session on Friday, November 3, we will offer a guided walk of the religious heritage of Nijmegen, including the St. Nicholas Chapel, which dates to the 900s. We hope you will join us for this activity in downtown Nijmegen!

NGG 2023: Religion in Motion

Bringing together scholars who work at the intersection of mobility and religion, this conference explores how the study of religion might be transformed through a focus on mobility in its various forms. The conference aims to broaden the theoretical and methodological repertoires for future studies of religion in motion whereby mobility and religion are analyzed not as separate themes, but as critical axes of people’s religious experiences across traditions, times, and spaces, with mobility and religion acting as co-constitutive of beliefs, practices, and socialities.

We are excited to welcome an international group of scholars from all phases of their careers to Radboud University and the city of Nijmegen. Please explore the program to see the full range of questions and discussions that will take place over the three days of the conference!
