Ronald Kroeze at Hotspot Sustainable Democracy

Tuesday 14 May 2024, 12:35 pm - 1:45 pm

CPG Director Ronald Kroeze will speak at a seminar at Radboud University's Hotspot Sustainable Democracy on Tuesday 14 May. The seminar will focus on sanctions, focusing on the difficulties democracies face imposing sanctions on authoritarian regimes, whether politicians can exercise leadership and still win elections and whether the EU human rights sanctions regime works.

Ronald Kroeze will discuss the conflict between the Netherlands and Indonesia in 1992, where Indonesian President Suharto decided to force the Netherlands to quit as Chairman of the Inter-Governmental Group on Indonesia (IGGI) - an aid instrument - to punish the Dutch for their criticism of a major human rights violation (the 'Dili massacre'). The case shows how, besides formal sanctions, other types of sanctions or punishments are used in an international society characterised by post-colonial dynamics. Ronald Kroeze published the volume Punishment in International Society earlier this year.

Besides Ronald Kroeze, several other experts on international sanctions will be present at the seminar, including Dr Frank Bohn (International Economics and Political Economy), Dr Ivan Boldyrev (Economic Theory and Policy) and Dr Narine Ghazaryan (International and European Law). We welcome you to come and participate in the seminar!
