On September 18 at 10:00, historian René van Hoften, former marketing lecturer at Business Communication of the Faculty of Arts of the RU, will give a lecture on the history of the Grotestraat. For the unsuspecting walker of today, the Grotestraat is one of the streets that descend from the Grote Markt to the Waalkade. In earlier centuries, it was one of the four main streets of the city, with Burchtstraat, Lange Hezelstraat and Broerstraat. Mayors and dignitaries lived there, there were leading inns, where you could meet the duke, it was the main artery of the Lower Town. It was part of the Jewish Quarter of Nijmegen, horse-drawn carts bounced down there and children loved to ride sledges there in the winter. Later, the street had dozens of shops and businesses, such as printers and publishers. Both at the top and at the bottom were renowned cafés and inns: de Oude Toelast, de Eenhoorn, Dollars and Extase. After the decay and demolition in the previous century, around 1980 new impetus was created. New construction in the old street pattern. From top to bottom along the Grotestraat and back again, this street vibrates with stories based on hundreds of years of history, stories about smuggling, about illegality and colonials, about dance institutes and dance books, about early cinemas and much more.
