Damasus, bishop of Rome (366-384), exhibited epigrams, written in Vergilian hexameters by himself, at the graves of martyrs in Roman churches and catacombs. Some of them are still visible there. The archaeological, historical, philological and theological aspects of these poems, as well as their reception and place in modern scholarship, are discussed at this international symposium.
