Symposium “Media to Inspire”

Tuesday 26 March 2024, 9 am - Wednesday 27 March 2024, 12:15 pm
Findings from the now blossoming research field of positive media psychology indicate that stories in the media can be very meaningful.

The purpose of positive media psychology is to examine how exactly media experiences can be meaningful and contribute to well-being. Meaningful media experiences can occur when watching a movie or online video or when reading a (news) story or book. Stories that are experienced as meaningful often give insights about life and can deeply move us when we witness moral beauty, such as kindness, love, bravery, or any other strong display of virtue. When moved by such an act, it opens people’s hearts to others and motivates to do good—even for strangers. Moreover, meaningful stories can contribute to being able to cope with difficult issues and situations. For instance, tragic portrayals of characters’ death may enable viewers to better deal with their own fear of death.
