Symposium Smart Learning Environments

Thursday 20 November 2025, 1 pm - 5 pm
Integrating Pedagogy, Psychology, and AI

In this symposium, we explore the interplay between self-regulated learning (SRL) - in which learners actively set goals, monitor progress, and adjust their strategies—and AI- or technology-assisted regulation of learning.

What to expect

Our aim is to bring together leading scholars investigating how elements of SRL can be offloaded to AI systems. This raises questions like:

  • What technologies are available to support students and teachers?
  • What challenges do teachers face when interpreting complex data?
  • What are the consequences of offloading SRL?
  • How can we assess the strength of students' SRL skills?

We address these questions through growing interdisciplinary collaborations and aim to highlight how different fields can mutually reinforce each other. Participants will engage with a concrete case study from ongoing research, examining how technological tools can support, rather than replace, the human element in learning.

Goal & target audience

This symposium aligns with BSI's mission by integrating insights from educational psychology, learning sciences, and technology design to empower young people in shaping their own learning and future. It is designed to be accessible to participants from a wide range of academic backgrounds. It also offers valuable perspectives for psychologists by examining how cognitive, emotional, and motivational processes interact with emerging technologies in the development of self-regulation. We believe that tackling tomorrow’s educational challenges requires interdisciplinary effort—this symposium provides a forum to foster exactly that.
