What is Taizé?
Today, the Taizé Community brings together about eighty brothers from different church backgrounds—Catholic, Anglican, and Protestant—and from nearly thirty countries. By its very existence, it is a “parable of community”: a concrete sign of reconciliation between divided Christians and separated peoples.
Most of the brothers live in the village of Taizé in Burgundy. Other brothers who have been sent on mission share the living conditions of the people around them in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and in a neighborhood in the suburbs of Paris. These small fraternities of a few brothers simply live among the people and take part in the local churches, but by their nature they remain temporary.
Throughout the year, the community welcomes tens of thousands of young people from Europe and other continents. They come for week-long gatherings where they experience prayer and community life together, with time for Bible reflection and sharing with others, in an environment where they can ask questions about their lives and their future.
Since 1978, the community has organized a European youth meeting at the end of the year, held each year in a different city on the continent at the invitation of the local churches. Youth meetings are also organized in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Several pilgrimages to countries with an Orthodox tradition have enabled young people to discover the treasures of this heritage.
