Teaching Practice

During this course, you will learn more about your role as a beginning academic teacher and build a didactic foundation for academic teaching.

    General

    Course content

During this course, you will translate basic didactic principles about learning and teaching into the implementation of group teaching at Radboud University.

    Target group

This course is accessible to all teachers and PhD candidates at Radboud University and teachers at Radboudumc who want to dive deeper into teaching practice.

Furthermore, within this course you can obtain a UTQ partial certificate for the competency domain Teaching practice. This is only available to:

    • Teachers participating in the regular UTQ programme of Radboud University.
    • PhD candidates and teachers with a small teaching appointment (< 0.2 FTE) or temporary contract (< 3 years) at Radboud University who want to obtain a partial UTQ certificate

Are you a PhD candidate or teacher at Radboud University who wants to obtain a partial UTQ certificate, and did you follow the Education in a Nutshell course in the years 2022 to 2024? Then we ask you to still register for this course if you want to obtain this certificate. You do not have to participate in the first three sessions, but instead work independently on the practice-oriented assignments.

    Working method during the course

The course consists of four meetings of 3 hours. There is a fifth, concluding meeting for the completion of the partial UTQ certificate. Teachers in the UTQ programme and PhD candidates who want to obtain this certificate have to attend all meetings. Teachers who do not want to obtain the partial UTQ certificate are not required to attend the fifth concluding meeting. However, attendance is still encouraged.

During the meetings, we work interactively and there is plenty of room to exchange experiences with fellow participants. Teachers participating in the UTQ programme or wishing to obtain a partial UTQ certificate work on their UTQ assignment for the competence domain Teaching practice during the meetings. The implementation of the UTQ assignment is (partly) carried out in the teaching practice of your faculty. You will receive feedback on your implementation in practice from a mentor from the faculty.

The course is taught in English, unless all participants speak Dutch..

    Certificate of attendance

Teachers who have attended all meetings and completed the assignments will receive a certificate of attendance. In order to receive the Certificate of attendance, active participation is required for 4 of the 5 meetings of the course.

    Partial UTQ certificate

Teachers within the regular UTQ programme and PhD candidates who want to obtain a partial UTQ certificate complete the competence domain Teaching practice with the trainer during the concluding meeting of the course. When the course and the UTQ assignment have been successfully completed, the trainer gives their advice to the faculty to award the partial UTQ certificate. Your faculty is responsible for awarding this certificate.

The partial UTQ certificate Teaching practice is part of a national pilot for partial certificates in which most universities in the Netherlands participate.

    Costs

    Participation is free of charge.

    Attendance during courses

Due to the high demand for the courses, the number of teachers who can participate is limited. To properly support as many teachers as possible, we ask you to prioritise the course and attend all meetings. The first meeting is essential for taking the course. If you cannot attend this meeting, we ask you to deregister for this edition and register for another edition. In the unlikely event that you cannot attend one of the other meetings, we ask you the following:

    1. Please cancel at least 24 hours in advance with the trainer of your course.
    2. Only cancel in exceptional cases (illness, family circumstances, etc.).

If you are absent during a meeting without cancellation, we are compelled to cancel your registration for the course. To obtain a Certificate of attendance, active participation during 4 of the 5 meetings of the course is mandatory.

Want to unsubscribe from an edition? Please email to Cursusbureau [at] oo.ru.nl (Cursusbureau[at]oo[dot]ru[dot]nl) stating your name, course name and edition number.

    Register

You can register for the course using the form below. You will receive an automatic confirmation of your registration. After completion of the course, you will receive a certificate of attendance (Please note: this is not a partial UTQ certificate). Do you want to obtain the partial UTQ certificate for the competency domain Teaching practice next to the proof certificate of attendance? Then first check carefully whether you have the required  teaching tasks during the course. If you do not have these tasks, consult your supervisor.  During the last meeting, the completion of the competency domain takes place. Obtaining the partial UTQ certificate is not possible for teachers at Radboudumc.
