Excessive nitrogen deposition in the Netherlands has major negative consequences for our forest ecosystems, including reduced tree vitality, soil acidification and the accumulation of organic matter. In my thesis, I therefore investigate the status of soil microarthropods – small animals that play an important role in the decomposition of organic matter. In doing so, I address three questions:
- What is the current status of soil microarthropods in these forests?
- How does the microarthropod community relate to the litter decomposition process in the soil?
- Can we restore the microarthropod community in these forests?
Joren Bruggink is a soil ecologist with an interest in biodiversity research on invertebrates and in applying this knowledge to nature restoration. After completing a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Biology at Aeres Almere and a Master’s degree in Ecology at VU University Amsterdam, he joined Radboud University to undertake his PhD research. During his PhD, he investigated the biodiversity of soil fauna and their role in the restoration of old oak forests in the Veluwe.
