On Tuesday, 1 July 2025, the bust of Professor Jos de Waele (1938-2001) will be unveiled in a formal ceremony. With this gesture, Radboud University honours De Waele and his significance for both science and the academic community of Nijmegen. The bust was created by artist Joris Verdonkschot on behalf of the Executive Board.
Professor Jos de Waele was professor of Classical Archaeology at the Faculty of Arts of Radboud University. De Waele gained international renown with his theory on Doric temple architecture and was considered a highly committed mentor at the then Catholic University of Nijmegen. De Waele inspired his students and supported them in the fields of archaeology and classical history. Tragically, he was killed in a car accident in 2001, along with two co-travelling students.
Following the solemn unveiling in the foyer of the Erasmus Building, there will be a special lecture on the significance of De Waele's thinking, given by (former) colleagues from the Netherlands and abroad. Registration is preferred for this lecture.
