The Renaissance is traditionally known as a period when a hitherto unprecedented and consistent orientation toward classical antiquity manifested itself in the Western world. First in the city-states of central Italy and later throughout Europe, a culture spread in which, for example, science and statecraft, literature and philosophy, architecture and visual arts mirrored the highly valued products of classical thinkers, writers and artists.
