The Renaissance is traditionally known as a period when a hitherto unprecedented and consistent orientation toward classical antiquity manifested itself in the Western world. First in the city-states of central Italy and later throughout Europe, a culture spread in which, for example, science and statecraft, literature and philosophy, architecture and visual arts mirrored the highly valued products of classical thinkers, writers and artists. These developments led to widespread attention to such aspects as harmony, idealization and refined balance.
