Workshop series You Have a Part to Play

In this workshop series, you will learn how to make impact with your education. You will think about the added value of your education in relation to the student, society and the world.

    General

Using the ‘You Have a Part to Play’ toolkit, you will work in five meetings on the question: how can you make visible, from your own discipline, which competences students develop? And how do you give this concrete form? Step by step, you will be guided in exploring the profile of your education programme in relation to sustainability, formulating learning objectives and defining learning activities and assessment.

In the workshop series, education (re)design and reflection on Higher Education for Sustainability (HESD) go hand in hand. The student's perspective is central. In the meetings, you continuously reflect on how your education contributes to training students with the competences needed for today's social issues.

The duration of the workshop series is six months and the time investment is approximately 24 hours (including meetings).

The workshop series consists of four content sessions and a retrospective moment. Guidline is the ‘You Have a Part to Play’ toolkit, developed by the Comenius Leadership project ‘You Have a Part to Play’.

The focus is on learning objectives and competences within a course. On the basis of course descriptions brought along, you examine what the course is about and reflect on its practical implementation. What learning objectives are set and which competences are students working on? And to what extent do the learning objectives and competences relate to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations?

    Session 1

You examine the profile of your study programme in relation to the theme of sustainability. We conceive sustainability in the broad sense of the term using the United Nations' Sutainable Development Goals as a guideline. Using interview methods, you will investigate how students experience the curriculum and dive deeper into your own vision on sustainability in education.

    Session 2

The focus is on learning objectives and competences within a course. On the basis of course descriptions of your programme, you will investigate what the course is about and reflect on its practical implementation. What learning objectives are set and which competences are students working on? And to what extent do the learning objectives and competences relate to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations?

    Session 3

Based on previously set learning objectives and competences, in the third meeting you will use storyboards to define learning activities. What do students do during lectures, what do they do between lectures and how do they prepare for a test or paper?

    Session 4

The fourth meeting focuses on future thinking. Creatively, you build your ideal educational future and present it to fellow course participants. You learn to distinguish between practical obstacles and real wishes and ambitions regarding education for sustainability.

    Session 5

The last meeting is a return moment to reflect together on the steps you have (not) been able to take in your education. The meeting takes place at the end of quarter 1 of the new academic year. We conclude together with lunch.

This workshop series is developed by members of the Radboud University project team ‘You Have a Part to Play’, made possible by the Comenius programme of Nationaal Regieorgaan Onderwijsonderzoek

    Edwin van Meerkerk

Edwin is professor on cultural education and researches and teaches about arts and cultural education, cultural policy, and higher education for sustainability. He is also a professor at ArtEZ University of the Arts and Leadership fellow in the Comenius Programme for Educational Innovation.

    Elize de Mul

Elize has a background in media studies and philosophy. Her interest lies in the relationship that humans maintain with the world and themselves. She is also part of the research team of the Comenius research project 'You Have A Part to Play', a three-year study that focuses on Higher Education for Sustainability (HESD) and the question of how sustainability (in the broad sense of the concept) could become a common denominator for all education at the Radboud University and the Radboudumc, while keeping eye for disciplinary differences and the various educational cultures within our university.

    Britt Broekhaus

Britt is project coordinator of the Comenius research project and is co-developer of the ‘You Have a Part to Play’ toolkit.

During this workshop series, we will dive into the how and why of our teaching. The success and learning efficiency of the series is best when participants join together with a colleague and/or student. This joint participation ensures valuable exchange of perspectives. We therefore recommend attending the course together with a student (preferably) and/or colleague. Both receive a certificate of participation.
