Every construction or renovation project on campus must take biodiversity into account. We lay this down in technical manuals that people must consult before starting a project. We also take a close look at what is needed outside the buildings. Sometimes this means letting the grass grow longer instead of mowing it closely. Other times, it may mean cutting down trees to increase the amount of light entering the forest on campus. We are not the only organisation that considers biodiversity when thinking about the environment. Together with the municipality of Nijmegen, HAN University of Applied Sciences and Radboudumc, among others, we are working on a vision for the area.
We encourage students and staff to go outside and learn more about biodiversity on campus in all kinds of ways. For example:
- We have a community garden on campus where staff and students can relax and actively garden.
- We encourage people to go walking via our platform Radboudwandelingen
- We encourage students and staff to meet outside as much as possible instead of in a meeting room.
In our work to create a healthy environment, we actively seek collaboration with scientists, such as researchers from the Healthy Landscape project. Together, we are working on:
- Counting birds, trees and soil animals, among other things;
- Creating rest areas on campus to protect nature;
- Informing people about biodiversity on campus, for example through posters of soil animals on transformer boxes.
