A milestone in open access: thousands of UMC publications now freely accessible

As of 1 July 2025, no fewer than 13,119 publications by UMC researchers have been retroactively added to the Radboud Repository. These publications are now freely accessible to everyone — a festive milestone and a major step towards greater visibility and societal impact of our scientific research.

This development has been made possible through the application of the Taverne Regulation, based on Article 25fa of the Dutch Copyright Act. This article gives researchers the right to make short scientific works that have been (partly) funded with Dutch public funds available in open access after six months.

Automatically arranged: from opt-in to opt-out
Radboud University has been applying this regulation since 2019. Initially, it was implemented as an opt-in scheme: researchers had to indicate themselves that they wanted to share their publications.

Since 1 December 2023, this has changed to an opt-out scheme. This means that publications are automatically made openly accessible, unless the researcher objects. So you don’t have to take any action yourself.

As of 1 July 2025, Radboudumc has also joined this opt-out scheme, making a large number of additional publications openly available.
