Adjustments to bicycle parking at the Maria Montessori building

The bicycle parking in the Maria Montessori Building will be modified this summer. The indoor staff bicycle parking area will be expanded to accommodate staff from FFTR, who will be moving into the building this summer. As a result of this expansion, fewer public bicycle parking spaces will be available inside the building. However, there are several alternative bicycle parking facilities across campus. In addition, extra bicycle parking spaces will be created, including along the edge of the woods near the Spinozapad. Scooters can be parked in the scooter parking area west of the University Library (UB).

Why is this change being made?

According to Radboud University’s mobility strategy, staff should have access to a secure, enclosed bicycle parking facility close to their workplace. In practice, the current staff bicycle parking area is often full, while the upper-tier racks are rarely used because they are inconvenient and offer insufficient space for modern bicycles.

The new racks will also accommodate bicycles fitted with baskets or child seats. At the same time, experience shows that students are more likely to park their bicycles outside a building than inside it. Several locations around the Maria Montessori building therefore provide practical and convenient alternatives.

Alternative parking for students

The upper-tier racks in the public bicycle parking area, which is frequently used by students, will remain available so that the facility’s capacity can be used as efficiently as possible.

In addition, several alternative bicycle parking locations are available:

Spinozapad

Bicycle racks will be installed along the Spinoza Path, at the edge of the woods. These will be ready before the start of the academic year.

University Library West bicycle parking

The existing bicycle parking facility west of the University Library is already widely used by students of the Maria Montessori building.

Spinoza Building bicycle parking

For students approaching from St Annastraat, the bicycle parking facility at the Spinoza Building is a logical and easily accessible option.

Work schedule

The works will take place during the summer closure, when the Maria Montessori building is closed (weeks 30 to 32). Staff can work from the Elinor Ostrom Building during this period and make use of the indoor cycle parking there. The refurbishment will be completed by week 33.

Further plans

By the start of the academic year, the staff bicycle parking facility in the Maria Montessori Building will be ready, as will the new bicycle racks along the Spinozapad. Throughout the academic year, the use of the bicycle parking facilities will be monitored and adjusted where necessary.

In the medium term, the bicycle parking area west of the University Library will be refurbished with high–low racks, creating approximately 200 additional bicycle parking spaces. In the longer term, a new, well-integrated bicycle parking facility will be developed in the outdoor area surrounding the Maria Montessori building.
