An inspirational afternoon exploring the world of Catholic periodicals. A celebratory conclusion to the BKNP

On 25 June 2026, the Catholic Documentation Centre (KDC) is organising a book launch and an afternoon of inspiration to mark the completion of the Bibliography of Catholic Dutch Periodicals (BKNP) at Radboud University in Nijmegen.

In an age when information is consumed primarily in digital form and in a fleeting manner, we tend to forget just how crucial magazines were to the dissemination of information. Every magazine offers a unique insight into a particular theme or field, for both professionals and enthusiasts. Because newspapers and magazines change over time, they are a fantastic resource for historians looking to analyse developments within a particular field.

As early as 50 years ago, the KDC recognised the importance of these sources for Dutch history and the role played by Catholics in this context. The sheer size of the collection — some 6,000 Catholic periodicals and magazines — made systematic cataloguing essential. This led to the creation of the BKNP, in which Catholic periodicals were described and catalogued in detail.

With the publication of the fifth and final volume, this monumental project is now complete. This volume comprises 586 entries covering topics such as politics, the trade union movement, healthcare, charity work and temperance. The complete series now contains over 3,300 entries. During the meeting, BKNP 5 will be officially presented and we will explore how the bibliography can be used for historical, biographical and digital research, including in relation to platforms such as Delpher.

See the agenda item for more information about the meeting, the (provisional) programme and the registration form.
