Annual review - blog Sijbrand de Jong

Over the past few weeks, a delegation from the Faculty Board has conducted annual performance reviews with all research institutes. The main topics discussed were each institute's achievements, whether it had stayed within budget, and what lessons the past year holds for the future. That may sound dry, but it turns out to be quite a celebration. All institutes have performed excellently, and all within a tighter budget than we would have hoped. We ask the institutes to highlight their achievements from the past year. Beyond the prizes won and grants received, a wealth of new measurements and insights were discussed. That last point is precisely what it should be about. It allows the Faculty Board to express its appreciation to the institute's management, appreciation that naturally extends to all staff members and support staff of the institutes. Bravo, everyone!

In addition to the meetings with the institutes, annual appraisal interviews are, if all goes well, held with all staff members. These are not all conducted by the faculty's Executive Board, but by the direct supervisor. For many people, including supervisors themselves, this can feel like an obligation. Ideally, staff members and their supervisors speak regularly throughout the year, making the formal annual appraisal interview an opportunity to reflect on everything you have to offer. If things are not going well, it is an opportunity to explore how to improve, and it often comes as a relief to discover you are not facing challenges alone. If things are going well, that is something worth celebrating.

With the new, simplified forms, these conversations can be prepared and conducted efficiently. There is therefore no excuse to let this opportunity pass you by.
