Ambitions

Van den Brink: “The Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies brings together three disciplines that offer a fundamental reflection on the fascinating and sometimes frightening times we live in. Radboud University has a long tradition of recognising the importance of such reflection. I look forward to working with colleagues and students to develop further forms that allow us to continue asking difficult and engaging questions about our world, our societies, and our inner experience.

“Especially in times of austerity, we have to be very clear on where we want to go. No spreadsheet can tell you that. I come from outside, and I do not bring any miracle cures. However, I do have a deep-seated belief in deliberation and co-creation, whether I am working with a group of students and colleagues or with the Council of Deans. And after what can at times feel like a long debate, I believe in clear decisions. If we know where we want to go, the rest will follow naturally, although rarely without a struggle. It is precisely this aliveness, and the great sense of responsibility for the university that colleagues and students express with it, that makes governing a connecting activity that rarely bores me.”

Rector Magnificus José Sanders: “We are looking back on a wonderful time with Heleen Murre-van den Berg as Dean, and we are grateful to her for her deep commitment. It is with full confidence that we now look forward to working with Van den Brink. He believes it is important to actively involve students and staff in complex issues and recognises the power of the individual to act for the greater good. We are very much looking forward to seeing how he will take up his new role and the questions he will ask us as an academic community.”
