Carla Sieburgh visiting fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre (EUI)

The Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute in Florence has awarded Carla Sieburgh a visiting fellowship for her research ‘Carving out a tangible, three-dimensional figure of equality’.

The project aims to analyse the concepts of equality and equivalence from various disciplinary perspectives and to give a detailed and concrete understanding of what they entail. Making the content of equality tangible — and therefore recognisable — is crucial. Equality and equivalence underpin many legal standards, drive the development of law, and the experience of unequal treatment often leads to existential crises and undermines peaceful coexistence (as numerous studies on primates have shown).
It is therefore essential to ensure that, in striving for equal treatment, no fundamental elements are overlooked and unconscious bias is avoided. This research on equality and equivalence will be carried out part-time over the next ten years, in collaboration with researchers at the Robert Schuman Centre, among others.
