Changes to the phishing/spam filter Radboud e-mail

To improve the security of our email communication, the policy regarding dangerous attachments has been adjusted. This policy applies to all Radboud email addresses and has been in effect since last week. Certain types of extensions (file types) have a greater risk of causing damage when opened. Emails containing these file types are caught by our phishing/spam filter and considered unsafe.

Previously, these emails were quarantined, after which the recipient could request release, after which our security department assessed the attachment.

The new situation

To prevent this and ensure security, emails with prohibited file extensions will now be deleted immediately without the possibility of release.

Below you will find an overview of how this new policy affects internal emails (from Radboud account to Radboud account) and external emails (from an external email address to a Radboud account), and how you will be notified about the deleted unsafe emails.

Internal emails

When an internal email contains an unauthorised attachment, the sender will receive a message that the email was not delivered, with the advice to share the file in another way, for example via OneDrive or Teams. Sharing via OneDrive offers additional benefits, such as setting permissions for the recipient and an end time for sharing, so there is no confusion about the status of the document.

External emails

For external emails, the recipient will receive a message that an email was blocked due to an unsafe attachment. The recipient can then contact the sender to discuss a more secure way of sharing. If sharing via OneDrive or Teams is not possible, we recommend using SURF's Filesender, a secure alternative.
