Clean-up action bicycle parking

In weeks 22 and 23, from 28 May, old, broken and abandoned bicycles on campus will be removed. Loose locks attached to racks will also be cut loose and taken away. This clean-up action will free up space for other bikes and reduce the risk of theft and vandalism.

Campus & Facilities conducts such clean-up several times a year. The selected bikes are first labelled with a warning sticker so that the owner still has a chance to take the bike away. After a while, employees of bike workshop BikeWerk, together with an invigilator from the Security Department, remove the stickered bikes.

Sustainable destination

At BikeWerk, these bicycles are refurbished. People with a distance to the labour market are trained as bicycle mechanics there and they turn two or three bicycles into one good bicycle. "The broken bicycles end up well" says Marco Schaap (Campus Mobility & Logistics). "In summer 2023, for example, 60 bicycles were collected. Half of them could be refurbished. Afterwards, 10 of these recycled bikes were made available to status holders free of charge."

The refurbished campus bikes are for sale for a friendly price at BikeWerk's shop on Regulierstraat 29 in Nijmegen.
