Due to the ongoing heatwave, a Code Red warning has been issued from Friday 26 June at 00:00. The advice is to stay out of the sun and keep cool.
The buildings on campus are being cooled, so teaching, exams and other activities can go ahead as planned. Only outdoor sports activities scheduled for Friday 26 and Saturday 27 June have been cancelled. We are, of course, keeping a close eye on the situation and continuously monitoring conditions in the buildings.
We’ve heard from staff and students that they appreciate being able to come to campus to cool down. We’re doing everything we can to keep the campus as cool as possible. At present, the situation is under control. Although we’re doing everything we can to cool the buildings on campus, you may find it too hot to work as a member of staff. In that case, you can discuss a suitable solution with your line manager.
Parking on campus will be free tomorrow, so that people can drive to campus in a (cooled) car.
Wherever you work or study, it is important to follow the additional advice from the KNMI and RIVM during a ‘Code Red’ heatwave.
General advice for hot weather includes:
- Make sure you keep drinking plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Also bring enough food with you, and don’t forget to eat regularly.
- Keep your working environment cool with these tips, or work from home in consultation with your line manager.
- Avoid direct sunlight. Stay in the shade as much as possible, especially between 12:00 and 18:00.
- Limit strenuous activity, especially during the hottest hours of the day.
- Look after yourself and each other. Are you experiencing dizziness, a headache, nausea or a rapid heartbeat? If so, take immediate action. If in doubt, contact a first-aid officer.
In an emergency
In the event of an emergency on campus, always call the emergency number 024 36 5 55 55 first. Calling this number ensures that emergency services respond more quickly and in a better-coordinated manner than if you call 112. The emergency number is available 24/7.
