This volume is based around the Radboud Prestige Lectures in New Testament that Jan van der Watt delivered a few years ago. In the book, he presents in nuce his approach to the study of ethics in Johannine literature, a project on which he has worked for more than a decade.
In the volume, which was co-edited by CTHS member Matthijs den Dulk, van der Watt’s lectures are published alongside chapters by leading specialists in the field who respond to van der Watt’s approach in ways both critical and constructive, and in so doing offer a retrospect and reflect on the prospects of the study of Johannine ethics. One of the chapters is written by Christoph Hübenthal, CTHS member and Professor of Systematic Theology at Radboud, who evaluates van der Watt’s ethical approach from a systematic perspective. Other contributors include Jörg Frey, Udo Schnelle, Matthias Konradt, Elizabeth Corsar, Cornelis Bennema, Craig Koester, Alan Culpepper, and Susanne Luther.
