Demonstration against budget cuts on 14 November

On Thursday 14 November, a national demonstration against the Dutch Cabinet’s cuts to the higher education budget and against the long-term studying penalty will take place in Utrecht. The Executive Board and the deans of Radboud University support the objective of this demonstration. Radboud University would like to facilitate the opportunity for its staff members and students to take part in this demonstration as much as possible.

What needs to be considered?

  • Students will not be required to attend lectures or classes on 14 November, except those responsible for patient care and those taking part in obligatory practicals that cannot be made up for or rescheduled (students should ask their lecturers about this).
  • Students who expect to be absent must give prior notification to their department.
  • Students are responsible for making up for any missed lessons.
  • If staff members wish to attend the demonstration, they must first discuss this with their supervisors. If their supervisor has no weighty arguments against it, the staff member may request special leave for this and subsequently register this (in the BASS registration system).
  • Lecturers who join the demonstration must make sure that students are still taught all of the material within the course period.
  • Staff members and students are responsible for their own transport to Utrecht. Travel expenses will not be covered.
  • Lecturer participation in the demonstration may have consequences for teaching on 14 November. As soon as the situation is clear, the faculties will inform their students and staff about this.

Why join the protest?

President of the Executive Board Daniël Wigboldus: ‘With these budget cuts, the Cabinet is shooting itself in the foot. The cuts will be of detriment to our knowledge, with which our students and staff members can contribute towards solutions to the complex problems that this Cabinet is facing. That is why I will be joining the protest on 14 November.’  Also see his message on LinkedIn.
