Disconnection Spinoza building

The Spinoza building will be disconnected from the campus network and campus facilities. An essential step towards its transformation into the most sustainable building on campus.

In preparation for the upcoming remediation, the 'harvesting' of reusable materials, and partial demolition of the building, all connections are carefully disconnected. Water, sewerage, central heating, data, fire alarm, electricity, and even the mobile phone transmitters on the roof will be disconnected to ensure a safe working environment and minimise disruptions. To keep operations and facilities running, diversions will be put in place in advance. Preparations will take place during February-March.

Harvesting for reuse

The sustainability ambition is far-reaching, so the aim is to harvest as many materials as possible from the building for reuse and minimise waste.
A concrete example of this is the dismantling of ceiling tiles. These have already been carefully removed and reserved for reuse in the Forum building. Three trees are too close to the building and will unfortunately have to make way. However, they will be given a second 'life' as the wood will return to the campus in the form of furniture in or outside the building.

Work site and diversions

The construction and layout of the work site and diversion routes guarantee the accessibility of surrounding buildings and the safety of traffic participants. The possible impact of diversions and works will be reported separately.

Planning

Although the exact sequence and method have not yet been fully worked out, the preliminary planning is that the physical disconnection will take place in April 2024. The lecture halls will be out of use after mid-March and the Spinoza building will not be accessible after the Open Day on 23 March. After the building is disconnected, the work site will be closed with construction fencing in the second quarter and the work of remediation, harvesting and demolition will start. These will continue until the end of 2024.

Construction work will start in mid-2025 and the entire construction period will take about two years. The building is expected to be ready for use at the start of the 2027/28 academic year.
