Do your research on Lowlands

Good news for anyone who would love to be at Lowlands but doesn’t have musical talent: the festival is looking for scientists who want to conduct on‑site research. Registration is now open, and Radboud University is ready to support you.

If you have an interesting idea for a study you’d like to carry out at Lowlands Science, Radboud University’s science communication team is happy to help. We can assist you in preparing your pitch and proposal so you can make a strong impression on the organisers. You can reach us at media [at] ru.nl or by phone at 024‑361 6000. If you have questions or want to discuss your idea, feel free to get in touch. Lowlands 2026 will take place from 21 to 23 August.

This year, on 12 March, the National Expertise Centre for Science and Society (NEWS) is offering an inspiration session for researchers on how to maximise your chances of being selected for Lowlands Science.

Your proposal must be submitted to the organisation no later than 27 March. If you would like our support, please contact us by mid‑March at the latest so you have enough time to incorporate our feedback.

What Is Lowlands Science?

In the Lowlands Science Lab, festival visitors voluntarily participate in experiments that contribute to scientific research. As a researcher, you not only have the opportunity to collect valuable data, but you also gain a unique platform to showcase your project to tens of thousands of visitors and national media.

In recent years, universities, colleges, hospitals and other institutions have conducted research at Lowlands on topics such as the effects of caffeine, pain stimuli, language development and agility while intoxicated. You can find an overview of previous studies on the Lowlands Science website.

Criteria

Lowlands Science is organised by Lowlands, the Dutch National Research Agenda (NWA), New Scientist and campaign agency BKB. If you do not require assistance, you can register directly via the Lowlands Science website. Please keep the following criteria in mind:

  • The research must be scientific in nature - often conducted in a laboratory setting - but should benefit from the live environment and participant pool offered by Lowlands Science.
  • The primary goal is to collect data for ongoing research. Information or awareness‑raising may be included, but only as a secondary objective.
  • The public experience, including participation in the research, should take no longer than 15 minutes.
  • Applicants should propose a creative and engaging experience for visitors and be able to carry it out independently.
  • The research theme should be socially relevant, appealing to Lowlands visitors, and aligned with their profile: 18–40 years old, curious, and urban‑oriented.
  • Please note that researchers participating in Lowlands Science are asked to make a financial contribution to the festival.
