Education budget cuts and taking action

We have an exciting week ahead of us: this coming Thursday, the Dutch House of Representatives is voting on the budget cuts to education. All signs seem to point to the hefty cuts to education, research and innovation going ahead as planned. This will damage the future prosperity of our society.

President of the Executive Board Daniël Wigboldus previously expressed his concerns in a speech: “With the stack of drastic cuts facing us, what has been so carefully built up by generations of students, lecturers, researchers and staff, mostly with more passion and love than money, is being rapidly demolished. It will take many years to return this to its current level.”

Take action

WOinAction is planning to take action at the Nijmegen city hall on Wednesday 11 December at 1:00 pm to protest against the education cuts. Anyone who wants to join it will be allowed to do so. What needs to be considered?

  • Students will not be required to attend lectures or classes on 11 December, except those responsible for patient care and those taking part in obligatory practicals that cannot be made up for or rescheduled (students should ask their lecturers about this).
  • Students who expect to be absent must give prior notification to their department.
  • Students are responsible for making up for any missed lessons.
  • If staff members wish to attend the demonstration, they must first discuss this with their supervisors. If their supervisor has no weighty arguments against it, the staff member may request special leave for this and subsequently register this (in the BASS registration system).
  • Lecturers who join the demonstration must make sure that students are still taught all of the material within the course period.
  • Staff members and students are responsible for their own transport to the city hall. Travel expenses will not be covered.
