Educational AI works better with teachers!

NOLAI recently published a market research rapport, in collaboration with Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship, on the current state of educational AI in the Netherlands. Interesting for companies developing educational technology (Ed Tech), but how does it benefit you as an educational professional?

In this article we will translate the results of the rapport to your educational practice. Educational technology is too important to just leave to companies. Also, they cannot do it alone.

The essence

The most important conclusion is clear: innovations wanted by education ask for the engagement of educational professionals, from the very start.

EduAI werkt beter met leraren!

We are developing a lot of technology and AI for schools in the Netherlands. Reaching the classroom is harder, whilst this AI is especially developed for education, in accordance with our standards and values. It enables teachers to enhance learning and teaching! In some instances, it even lessens the workload or ensures greater inclusivity in classrooms.

How can you help

Your practical knowledge is needed to develop products that really help you. Educational AI works better when the connection between developers and educational practice is strong. The quality grows when:

  • Developers know about the everyday reality in classrooms;
  • Educational professionals get involved early with formulating questions and making pedagogical didactic choices;
  • Implementation aligns with existing work processes and systems in schools;
  • Experiences from schools are actively used to further improve products.

Your role as professional

  • Help to pinpoint the right issue
    Your experience highlights which problem is actually at play in practice and which teaching choices make sense.
  • Make solutions workable
    Your input helps ensure that technology remains manageable withing existing routines and systems.
  • Use Dutch educational technology
    Support Dutch companies: whether a new product proves to be cost-effective naturally depends on how it is actually used by schools.

Three practical steps to take

Do you want to contribute to better educational technology? These are the steps you can take:

  • Consider EdTech-companies as a partner in education
    (Not just your supplier)
  • Share your experiences to gain a quicker understanding of what works
    (And what doesn’t)
  • Check interactions with other systems and open standards
    (see Edu-V)

Three things to remember

  • AI in education asks for innovation, but not every educational professional should innovate themselves.
  • Responsible educational AI does not replace teachers and doesn’t add to their workload, but tasks could change.
  • Responsible educational AI does not dictate the pedagogical approach, but supports and enhances the teachers preferred approach.

Do you want to play an active part?

Together with schools, scientists and EdTech companies, NOLAI develops, researches and implements educational AI that enhances learning and teaching. We organize workshops for teachers throughout the Netherlands, because it all starts with what happens in the classroom, and because we’re smarter together!
