Five tips for the InScience 2026 science film festival

From 3 to 8 March 2026, the InScience Film Festival will once again take place in Nijmegen. There you can discover dozens of science films, in-depth talks, experiments and art installations. The theme of this eleventh edition is “The Things We Do For Love”. Once again this year, various researchers from Radboud University will be present at the festival.

InScience is an international science film festival. For one week, dozens of documentaries, animated films and other films will be screened, including several films that are being shown in the Netherlands or Europe for the first time. With a varied programme for young and old, there is something for everyone at LUX throughout the week. There are also activities such as the presentation of the Klokhuis Science Prize, a visit to the observatory on the Radboud University campus, and much more. And: students pay the discounted rate of £5 for all film tickets!

1. Big Ideas: Scenes with the Sekszusjes

Thursday 5 March, 7:30 p.m. – LUX 7 – More info

In this Big Ideas programme, the Sekszusjes bring television scenes and film clips about sexuality and intimacy to life. Using recognisable examples, they show how sex and intimacy have been portrayed over the years and how this affects us.

What is the impact of media and art on our sex lives? What developments have been visible in recent years? How can we as a society deal with this? And what role does science play in this? These questions will be discussed in a panel discussion with the Sekszusjes, Tila Pronk and communication scientist Serena Daalmans.

2. Big Ideas: Fantastic Love with Novio Magica

Saturday 7 March, 7:30 p.m. – LUX 7 – More info

Imagine: you could make someone fall in love with you with a magic spell, or make someone fall head over heels for you with a homemade love potion. Would you do it? The magic of love is a cliché in countless books and films, from biting into an enchanted apple to casting a spell, but how ethical is it really?

In this programme, with the help of an expert, you will brew your own scientifically based love potion, writer Hanna Bervoets will speculate on supernatural and future forms of love, and together with them and university lecturer and expert in medieval sorcery László Sándor Chardonnens, we will discuss the malleability of love, the role of consent and the ethical side of magic.

3. Seeing Stars

Wednesday 4 March, 7 p.m. – Huygens Building, Radboud University – More info

There is little as romantic and intriguing as the night sky full of stars: sometimes hidden, but always present, distant and mysterious, twinkling and inviting. Countless stories have been inspired by the stars, countless journeys have been made possible by them, countless romantic feelings have been expressed through them.

You will discover it all during this special programme in the Huygens Building, on the campus of Radboud University. We will start with two short films, Stars and O Seeker, about non-Western perspectives on astronomy, sexuality and the origin myth, and then we will go stargazing in the Observatory, on the roof of the building.

4. Holy Destructors

Time and location to be announced later

While we as humans do our best not to be forgotten and to make a lasting impact on the world around us, microfungi remind us that everything must perish in order to continue to exist. Holy Destructors tells a story of transformation with religion as its backdrop and fungi as its metaphor.

The film combines beautiful macroscopic images of growing fungal cultures with a look at the work being done to protect artefacts, relics and the bodies of deceased bishops from decay. After the film, biologist Bjorn Robroek will talk more about fungi, accompanied by music from Sissel Marie Tonn.

5. Stand-Up Science

Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 March, from 3 p.m. – LUX Café

Come to Café LUX on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, grab a pair of wireless headphones and listen to Stand-up Science. This edition features Rowin Jansen (on the supervision of secret services), Lieke van Son (on black holes), Koen de Reus (on the language of seals) and Bas van de Meerakker (on molecular research).
