Forgotten Stories: Slavery and the Colonial Chains of 's-Hertogenbosch

“UN labels slave trade as worst crime against humanity ever,” NOS recently headlined. At the same time, attention to the history of slavery is growing in the Netherlands, with an increasing number of municipalities seeking to acknowledge, investigate, and discuss this past.

Historical research plays a key role in this process, contributing to a better understanding of the past and its impact on the present.

Vergeten verhalen: Slavernij en de koloniale ketens van 's-Hertogenbosch (Forgotten stories: Slavery and the colonial chains of 's-Hertogenbosch) examines how colonialism was deeply intertwined with life in the city. It shows how administrators, companies, and residents were connected to distant parts of the Dutch Empire. Rather than being remote, slavery was a structural element of the economic system, with traces that remain visible in the streets of Den Bosch today.

The book is written by Dries Lyna, Kim Lempereur, and Joris Martens.
