The reason for removing the PCs is that Microsoft is ending support for the current Windows 10 operating system and the PCs are not compatible with Windows 11. Shared use of the desktop PCs also poses security risks.
Advantages of the new approach
There are many advantages to using personal laptops in the teaching rooms.
- Convenience
Many lecturers and students already use their own (RU) laptop when teaching or giving presentations. The advantage of this is that the user is familiar with their own laptop and has immediate access to their own data. - Sustainability
Most Radboud University employees already work with RU laptops, so investment in the purchase of new equipment will be limited. This aligns with the circularity strategy that seeks to avoid the use of virgin materials and resources. - Security
In principle, personal laptops are not shared with other users, unlike desktop PCs. This minimises the risk of a data breach or hack. Personal use prevents files from remaining accessible to the next user, USB sticks being left behind, and stops third parties from accessing a website to which others have previously logged in. Not replacing the current PCs means that a major investment in hardware is avoided and annual maintenance of desktop PCs is no longer necessary.
Use of laptop from 14 July
This project is being implemented by Campus & Facilities and Information & Library Services, in close cooperation with the faculties. During the summer break, from 14 July, the lecturer PCs and accessories will be removed and the teaching spaces will be furnished with connection and charging facilities for laptops and instructions for use. A limited number of loaner laptops will be available for emergencies such as a broken laptop.
What if you use the lecturer desktop PCs and don’t have an RU laptop yet? Then request one in good time through your own faculty channels so that you are prepared for this change.
