Heino Falcke appointed to European committee for renewal of ERC Scientific Council

Heino Falcke, Professor of Astrophysics at Radboud University, has been appointed as a member of the Identification Committee of the European Research Council (ERC). This new European committee will nominate members for the ERC Scientific Council and was established by the European Commission as part of the preparations for Horizon Europe 2028–2034, the EU's new programme for research and innovation.

The ERC Scientific Council

The Scientific Council is the independent governing body of the ERC and defines the organisation's scientific funding strategy and methodologies. The council comprises 22 leading scientists from across Europe. New members are appointed by the European Commission based on recommendations by the Identification Committee, through a transparent procedure that includes consultation of the scientific community.

The Identification Committee

Falcke is one of six internationally renowned scientists serving on the committee:

  • Martin Vetterli (chair), Honorary Professor and President Emeritus EPFL, Switzerland
  • Paula Eerola, Research Council of Finland
  • Heino Falcke, Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands
  • Katerina Harvati, Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, Germany
  • Andres Metspalu, University of Tartu, Estonia
  • Maria Rescigno, Research Center for Molecular Medicine (CeMM), Austria
