We are already proud of all our partners in education, science and business who made this possible.

Hooray, NOLAI is one year old and what a lot has been achieved!
The National Onderwijs Lab AI (National Education Lab AI), funded by the National Growth Fund (EZK), is now one year old, HOORAY! An investment of €80 million to develop digital intelligent education innovations and explore the pedagogical, societal and social consequences of these digital education innovations is quite a responsibility. What has been achieved in the first year?
The First Steps Towards a Shared Language
NOLAI's frame of reference provides insight and guidance for looking at the development of AI in education. Inge Molenaar's model for the six levels of automation reflects the division of roles between AI, the teacher and the learner. There was already a Dutch, English and French version, and now there is also a Norwegian one!
The First Inventory of Current Questions in Education
In the academic year 2022-2023, a first broad inventory was carried out on questions in schools around the use of AI in education. This inventory will be repeated annually. There is the possibility to register for one of the question articulation sessions in Meppel, Nijmegen or Middelburg.
First 10 Projects Launched
A balanced portfolio was created based on the inventoried questions. The projects cover different levels of automation at So, Po- and Vo schools throughout the Netherlands. Each project takes about three years, and in each year, a phase is completed, ranging from concept to development to validation.
Scientific-Focused Programme
In the first year of NOLAI, an interdisciplinary scientific programme was also drawn up, which forms the basis for all further activities.
Our research helps teachers and learners achieve responsible use of AI in education.
In five focus areas, we investigate pedagogical-didactic aspects, technical aspects, data and infrastructure, ethical factors and professionalisation aspects.
Broad and Diverse Team and Network of Partners
NOLAI explicitly collaborates with education, scientists and companies. At the start of NOLAI, there was already a steering committee with broad representation. In the past year, eight partners from education, five from business and one from science have joined NOLAI. The team has also formed and grown from 5 employees to 45. Three teachers are also part of the team as Teachers in Residence and help keep us grounded. We are proud of the good cooperation inside and outside NOLAI. Kudos to each and every one of you!
Why NOLAI?
In recent years, we have seen more and more intelligent technologies in the classroom. The corona epidemic caused an acceleration, but despite this, the responsible deployment of AI in education is still in its infancy in the Netherlands, especially internationally. A targeted and thoughtful deployment of AI offers opportunities to improve the quality of education. More direction on digitalisation of education is needed to seize opportunities and avoid undesirable effects. That is why the NOLAI was created.
