Uncertainty
The news is leading to feelings of uncertainty among staff and students. In June, we already heard that the University's financial outlook was not rosy. With the government's announced cuts, it will be even harder for the University to make ends meet. Specifically, less funding will be available for starter and incentive grants, which involves grants that have not yet been awarded, and international education. The Dutch government is also planning to introduce ‘langstudeerboetes’, which are fines for students who take longer to complete their studies. A lot of the specifics remain unclear at this point.
“We understand the need for clarity and a greater understanding of the impact of this blow,” said Agnes Muskens, Vice President of the Executive Board. “We are investigating what measures are needed to work towards a healthy financial situation, also in the longer term. We will have to work together to get us through this difficult period.”
This is also emphasised by President of the Executive Board Daniël Wigboldus: “Collaboration is essential to maintain the quality of our research and education. Indeed, we are convinced of the crucial role our University plays in the society of today and tomorrow. We disapprove of the government's decision to drastically reduce funding for knowledge development and transfer, which forms the foundation of our society. We will continue to communicate this important message. At the same time, we will have to look critically at how we can consolidate our financial position.”
Impact
The entire University is affected by the cuts. At present, the impact on specific sections of the university is not yet clear. Although measures have already been taken, and we are exploring how to make our operations more efficient, more substantial interventions will probably be required to cope with the financial challenges. The Executive Board, faculties and other units are discussing the situation that has arisen. We will continue to keep everyone informed through the Radboud weekly notices, faculty newsletters and our website.
Against the budget cuts
The fact that the University is taking measures does not mean that we are not opposing the budget cuts announced by the cabinet last week. The budget cuts to education, research and innovation are harming society's future prosperity. The cabinet may say that it is committed to maintaining a competitive position and fostering an excellent business climate, but these austerity plans are clearly at odds with that ambition. In collaboration with the Universities of the Netherlands (UNL), Radboud University continues to speak out against these major cutbacks through continuously drawing attention to the importance of science and education for the future of the Netherlands.
