Is surrealism a religion? An investigation into the affinities between surrealism and Christian mysticism

Lieven De Maeyer receives a Rubicon grant to conduct research on surrealism in Spain.

Twenty-four talented and recently graduated researchers will have the opportunity to gain valuable research experience abroad. The Rubicon round 2025-2 organised by NWO had a budget of over 4.7 million euros. Dr Lieven De Maeyer, who recently obtained his PhD with distinction from Radboud University, is one of them and will use the grant to spend two year at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona.

About the research

From the NWO grant allocation: 'Surrealism is often seen as anti-religious, but this project reveals its surprising connections with Christian mysticism. It explores parallels between surrealist artistic techniques and mystical spiritual practices, and shows how artists like Salvador Dalí even converted to Christianity in pursuit of surrealism’s deeper goals.'
