Karen Geertsema appointed as a Member of the Council of State

Assistant professor of Migration Law Karen Geertsema has been appointed Councillor of State at the Administrative Jurisdiction Division of the Council of State. On 17 April 2026, the Dutch Council of Ministers decided to nominate her for appointment by His Majesty the King. Geertsema will start in her new position on 1 September 2026.

Karen Geertsema is affiliated with the Centre of Migration Law at Radboud University. She also serves as a deputy judge at the District Court of Overijssel. Earlier in her career, she worked as a lawyer in Amsterdam, specialising in migration law.

The Administrative Jurisdiction Division of the Council of State is the Netherlands’ highest general administrative court. The division handles disputes between citizens and government and rules on cases involving migration law, environmental and planning law, and general administrative law.

With this appointment, Geertsema moves into one of the most important positions in Dutch administrative law.
