Kilian Geryszewski on Being a Teacher in Residence

Kilian Geryszewski is a primary school teacher where he spends two days a week teaching group two at a primary school in The Hague. Since September 2022, he has also been working as a Teacher in Residence (TiR) at NOLAI. While being hands-on in the classroom and behind the scenes at NOLAI, this is what it means to be a Teacher in Residence.

"I wanted to do something part-time in addition to my work in education. I really enjoy being in front of the classroom, but I also want to be involved at a different level or in a different way. At that time, NOLAI was looking for Teachers in Residence for two days a week to work on projects around AI in education. The distribution is perfect as far as I am concerned: three days a week at school, two of which are in front of the classroom, and two days at NOLAI.".

The fact that I am actually in front of the classroom myself really makes a difference.

Unique Position

Science and daily teaching practice are really two different worlds. NOLAI's Teachers in Residence provide the link between teaching practice and research projects. Kilian: "That link needs to become stronger. There should be more talk about AI in education because AI is still in its infancy. Teachers hear about it in the media, and maybe they already use tools like ChatGPT, but we aren't there yet in working out what the educational landscape has at its fingertips and whether it's good or fair.".

Making a Difference

Knowledge of educational practice is indispensable at NOLAI. Teachers in Residence are the link between teaching and science, with one of their tasks being to pick up questions about AI from education. Kilian: "The fact that I am actually in front of the classroom myself really makes a difference. There is a delay in assessing the research from what happens during teaching, whereas what happens in my classroom is live. I can also always drop in on colleagues and see how they approach something. What tools are they using? What support are they missing?".
