Marc van Oostendorp and Lotte Jensen Appointed to Visiting Chairs in France

On 10 December 2024, the festive launch of the Isabelle de Charrière Visiting Chair took place in Paris. This initiative allows three Dutch professors each year to deliver a series of guest lectures and presentations at the French university with which they are affiliated through this programme. Professor Dr Lotte Jensen and Professor Dr Marc van Oostendorp, both from Radboud Universiteit, are among the inaugural holders of this chair.

The Isabelle de Charrière Chair focuses on the study of Dutch language, culture, and literature with an interdisciplinary and contemporary approach. Jensen: "This offers an opportunity to strengthen Dutch studies in France and foster ties between the two countries in the fields of education and research."

Jensen, a professor of Dutch literary and cultural history, will be affiliated with the University of Lille through this chair. Van Oostendorp, a professor of Dutch and Academic Communication, will share his expertise at the prestigious Sorbonne University in Paris. Additionally, Professor Dr. Mary Kemperink, emeritus professor of modern Dutch literature at the University of Groningen, will hold a visiting chair at the University of Strasbourg. Radboud Universiteit takes pride in the contributions of two of its professors to this international effort.

Shared Culture

The contributions of Professors Jensen and Van Oostendorp not only strengthen academic ties between the Netherlands and France but also highlight the connection between our shared history, society, and literary and cultural traditions. Their work underscores not only the richness of Dutch studies in France but also its relevance in a world that now more than ever requires international collaboration and meaningful cultural exchanges.

Van Oostendorp stated, "Dutch and French have always been in contact with one another. I look forward to exploring their mutual influences with the students in Paris."

Isabelle de Charrière

The writer Belle van Zuylen (1740–1805), also known as Madame Isabelle de Charrière after her marriage in 1771, is celebrated in the annals of Dutch literary history as a liberal, modern, emancipated, and enlightened author. Naming this visiting chair after Isabelle de Charrière reflects the choice of an exceptional figure who symbolizes intellectual freedom, curiosity, and engagement. Her ability to navigate between Dutch and French cultures perfectly embodies the spirit of exchange and connection that this visiting chair seeks to promote.
