Mini Library Now Available in Erasmus Hall

Something that shouldn't be missing at the Faculty of Arts is a mini library to exchange, borrow and donate books without any obligation. So, since this week, the mini library cabinet in the hall of the Erasmus building is officially in business.

Whether you are looking for a Dutch non-fiction book, an English classic or a compelling German novel, you might just find your next book in the faculty's mini library. We welcome books in all languages, so feel free to share a piece of your literary treasure so we can continue offering the most diverse and vibrant selection possible. The mini library can be found to the right of the lifts, next to Radboud in'to Languages.

The importance of reading

At the Faculty of Arts, there is not only a lot of reading but also a lot of research on reading. These studies emphasize the importance of reading novels. Last year, Master's student Sharon Hieps mapped the contents of mini library boxes in Nijmegen. She concluded that they contained many living writers and a relatively even distribution of male and female writers, among other things, and we are thus curious to see if the faculty library will show the same patterns. Her thesis supervisor, Jeroen Dera, was recently presented with an award for his research on literature education and disengagement among young people, and earlier this month, linguist Lynn Eeckhoff received her PhD on the connection between reading and social cognitive skills. Her research found that regularly reading stories makes you more empathetic. This sounds reason enough to get a book off the shelf!
