Van der Sijs, renowned for her work on language history and etymology, discusses how words originate, evolve, get recorded in dictionaries, and sometimes disappear from usage. The book also delves into mental lexicons and the ways in which words are interconnected in networks.
“At the age of 20, I started out as an editor for a Dutch–Russian dictionary. Ever since, I’ve been fascinated by the many facets of words. I hope this little book passes on some of that love and fascination to a new generation,” says Van der Sijs.
First in a new series
Dijt onze woordenschat alsmaar uit? is the first volume in the new Dutch in a Nutshell series, an initiative by the Department of Dutch Language and Culture at Radboud University. The series offers concise, accessible booklets on recent research in Dutch linguistics and is also suitable for use in secondary education. Supplementary teaching materials will be available for each volume via the Dutch Language Research and Didactics Working Group (WODN).
About the author
Nicoline van der Sijs (1955) is currently a guest researcher at the Institute for the Dutch Language in Leiden and emeritus professor of Historical Dutch Linguistics at Radboud University. She is a prolific author in the fields of etymology and Dutch language history, founder of etymologiebank.nl, a regular contributor to Onze Taal magazine, and a recipient of multiple awards for her work.

The book is published under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license and will be available for free download from Radboud University Press starting 23 May. A printed edition is also available for €25.
