Constitutional democracies operate in an increasingly complex world in which they face a wide variety of social, political and economic challenges: from growing international insecurity to climate change and environmental pollution, and from a growing dependence on (AI) technology and digitalisation to resistance to migration patterns. Autocratic tendencies, instrumentalism, subversive crime and political populism are leaving deep scars. These external and internal challenges require constitutional democracies to reflect on their own functioning. How can we ensure that the democratic constitutional state remains resilient in the future?
New SteR Research Programme: A Resilient & Sustainable Constitutional Democracy
How can the constitutional democracy remain resilient in an era of geopolitical tensions, climate change, digitalisation and migration? With a renewed research programme, SteR will focus over the coming years on seven interconnected research programmes that contribute to a resilient and future-proof constitutional democracy.
Building on the foundations and core principles of public law, and driven by the ambition to contribute to a resilient and future-proof democratic constitutional state, SteR has developed six complementary thematic research programmes for the coming years:
- Resilience & Security
- Markets & Versatility
- Liveable & Healthy Environment
- Equality & Emancipation
- Migration & Citizenship
- Conflict & Redress
Together with SteR's overarching research programme, these six thematic programmes form a total of seven research programmes. Each programme is led by three to five SteR researchers from different departments. SteR aims to foster collaboration across the themes to stimulate shared knowledge development and create synergies.
The new research programme is the result of the strategic review carried out over the past six months in response to the Mid-Term Evaluation (2022–2024).
