NOLAI Webinar | Safely Experimenting with AI in Education

What does the student need? That question should come first when we try out different AI applications in the classroom. In the upcoming NOLAI webinar on Thursday, July 3, from 16:00 to 16:45, software developer Harm van Stekelenburg and teacher-in-residence Bram van Mil will explain how you can safely experiment within your own digital environment.

“Unfortunately, most of our attention goes to topics like privacy and user agreements. Which data can we safely put into a language model? And who has access to this data? Important questions, but we would much rather focus on discovering what actually works in the classroom.”

Harm is part of the NOLAI tech team that set up a local server to deploy and explore various smart applications. “You don’t always need the most powerful AI models to experiment. With open-source (free and publicly accessible) language models, you can already create great classroom activities. These models can run on an ordinary home PC, and it’s feasible for a school (or school board) to operate a local system where you can experiment freely. Because your data doesn’t wander around in the cloud, you minimize privacy risks.”

As a primary school teacher and ICT specialist, Bram explains how teachers can use AI models to support teaching. “You need to handle student data carefully, and even uploading an Excel sheet with names to create group assignments is already sensitive. How great would it be if you could generate this worry-free on your own PC?”
