NOLAI’s Vision on AI in Education Takes Center Stage in Taipei

NOLAI brings together multiple scientific disciplines to research responsible AI in education, focusing on the augmentation perspective: AI should be used to support (human) teachers and students. NOLAI’s approach is not only relevant for the Dutch education sector; internationally, there is significant interest in our vision of AI in education.

On November 22, the international conference “Elementary and Secondary School Education Reform in the Era of Big AI” took place in Taipei, organized by the Professor Huang Kun-huei Foundation. The central theme was “Revolutionizing K-12 Education in the Age of AI: Curriculum, Teaching and Assessment.” Professor and NOLAI Scientific Director Inge Molenaar attended and delivered a keynote: “It was an honor to be invited by the Professor Huang Kun-huei Foundation for the International Conference on Education Policy 2025.”

Self-Regulation Is Crucial in the AI Era

In her keynote “A Co-Evolving Socio-Technical System: Students, Teachers, and AI Technologies,” Molenaar emphasized that AI brings both opportunities and challenges. “I discussed the importance of students’ domain knowledge and skills in an AI era, and how AI can contribute by enabling adaptive learning within educational AI applications,” she explains. Generative AI forces students to balance learning and performance, making self-regulation essential. Molenaar: “Self-regulation skills are critical for students to shape their future learning process and become adaptive learners.”

Teachers as Key Players

The role of teachers was also a major topic. Molenaar stressed: “Co-design with teachers can drive the development of socio-technical systems where teachers and AI technologies evolve together.” According to her, collaboration with teachers is crucial to ensure AI applications are developed not only technologically but also pedagogically responsibly.

Adaptive Learning Platforms

The conference showcased examples of AI in education. “It was an inspiring event with excellent presentations and examples of educational AI, such as the Taiwan Adaptive Learning Platform (TALP),” says Molenaar. Taiwan is taking an important step in implementing the Digital Learning Enhancement Plan for Grades 1–12 (2022–2025) and preparing a strategic action plan for AI.

‘AI Should Become Taiwan’s Pride’

In his closing speech, Professor Huang Kun-huei expressed his ambition: “I hope AI education will become a source of pride for Taiwan, just as semiconductors are.” The conference concluded with a roundtable forum where international experts formulated recommendations for further developing AI policy in primary and secondary education.

National News in Taiwan

The conference and Inge Molenaar’s keynote were covered by Taiwanese media. The news highlighted the rapid development of AI and its inevitable impact on K-12 education. It emphasized AI’s potential to act as a “personal tutor” for students, enabling direct feedback and personalized learning. At the same time, Huang Kun-huei advocated for using AI to optimize curriculum, teaching methods, and assessment.
