Nominate a teacher of the future for national recognition

Do you know a lecturer who inspires, innovates and gives students the tools they need to tackle complex challenges? The Sustainable Lecturer 2026 Award is now open for nominations. This national initiative puts the spotlight on lecturers who make a special contribution to forward-thinking, equitable and therefore sustainable education.

Nominate a teacher now

Plenty of reasons to participate

The aim of the award is to recognise and appreciate lecturers who make a difference and thoroughly prepare their students for the complex challenges of today. For a lecturer, a nomination is a great compliment and recognition from colleagues and administrators. Ultimately, by sharing all these stories, the organisation wants to inspire the Netherlands to make education more sustainable.

What is the definition of a “sustainable teacher”?

Think of a teacher who:

  • integrates sustainability into the curriculum;
  • challenges students to think about their role in the world;
  • sets up projects around circularity, biodiversity or social justice;
  • motivates others to take sustainable steps too.

Organiser Leren voor Morgen defines a sustainable teacher as 'someone who actively contributes to making education and society more sustainable. This means that the teacher works based on values such as connectedness, justice and responsibility for future generations.'

Nominated and then?

Teachers are nominated from each level of education (primary, secondary, vocational and higher education). After the closing date for nominations on 22 February, a professional jury consisting of former winners will get to work; they will ultimately select one winner from each level of education. The official award ceremony will take place on 26 March.

Bernard van Gastel

Last year's nominees were:

Bernard van Gastel, university lecturer in Sustainable Digitisation:

‘The appreciation of my colleagues has meant a lot to me. Sometimes it feels as if I am working alone to make our programme more sustainable, because it is something new that needs to be set up. So it's nice when colleagues see this and express their appreciation. This has given me a boost to continue with sustainability and also to seek more cooperation. Because it is a much broader issue.’

Radboudumc docent Jeroen van Dillen

Jeroen van Dillen, gynaecologist and lecturer in Medicine:

‘I considered it a tremendous honour to be nominated by my students. The feedback they provided with the nomination was very valuable and has strengthened my drive to continue providing ‘boundless’ education.’
