NRO grant for research on how to help primary school students transfer skills from programming to maths

Whether creating an animation, designing a game, or building a website, through programming, children learn cognitive skills to solve digital problems. These computational thinking (CT) skills, which have been included in the new Dutch primary curriculum, are purported to be broadly applicable. But do children really benefit from these skills outside of programming?

To find out, Johanna van Schaik, Noortje Janssen and Ard Lazonder will investigate how and with which forms of support primary school students can best transfer the CT skills learned during programming lessons to novel programming and math assignments. The results can facilitate the design of effective CT instruction within the new curriculum.

Johanna, Noortje and Ard will receive an NRO grant for their research project! We are really proud and would like to congratulate them on this!
