NSE 2024: Radboud student remains satisfied, renewed focus on study load and reflection

On average, students at Radboud University are once again satisfied with their study programme. Overall satisfaction, atmosphere and the likelihood of students choosing the same programme again have for years been rated very positively and higher than the national average. Students also largely experience a safe environment at the university. Themes that require continued attention are the study load and the topic of reflection.

This is according to the National Student Survey (NSE), the annual national survey on student satisfaction. All students in higher education are invited in spring to give their opinion about their study programme and university. Over 7,400 Radboud University students completed the survey. Rector magnificus José Sanders: ‘We would like to thank all students for their feedback. We are proud that many aspacts are positively appreciated. And thanks to the feedback, we can also work purposefully on themes that deserve attention.'

Students positive about study guidance, lecturers, challenge and safety

Many topics are rated positively, and often have been for years, by students at Radboud University. We particularly stand out in the appreciation of study guidance and our lecturers. The level and challenging nature of the programme are also highly regarded.

In addition, students largely feel at home on campus, and feel safe to be themselves. With an average report mark of 8.29, social safety at Radboud University is rated even slightly better than last year. A great result because Diversity, equality and inclusion, as well as social safety, are important strategic themes at our university. With the Prevent-Care-Cure project, we will actively work on further strengthening the social interaction culture, organisational structure and support systems around social safety.

Renewed focus on study load

The main area for improvement according to students is the study load, especially the distribution of the study load over the academic year and the extent to which credits correspond to the actual study load. The results underline the need for renewed administrative attention to this issue.

As an extension of the process aimed at optimising Radboud University's business operations, the design, organisation and support of education at Radboud University will also be reviewed. A key area for improvement that will be included in this is the balance in the annual timetable. In addition, study programmes will look at where there are concrete opportunities for improvement in the relatively short term. In doing so, they actively involve their own students.

More emphatic place for reflection in studies

For Radboud University, reflection is a core value, which is why it has a prominent place in the new educational vision. However, according to students, this theme does not yet have an solid place in their study programme. This is especially true for questioning their own views and incorporating multiple perspectives in discussions or assignments.

Under the leadership of the education vice-deans' consultation, a strategic implementation agenda is being drawn up for the education vision. Along this path, ambitions in the field of reflection are translated into implementation within the organisation. This will explicitly address how we, as Radboud University, can more explicitly address social issues in our education.
