Open call: business partner for the development of an AI-supported practice environment for teacher education (closed)

Teacher education students are more and more learning how to work with dashboard data. But reading data is not the same as understanding data. Students find it challenging to meaningfully interpret data from dashboards and student monitoring systems (SMS) when making teaching decisions. That’s why teachers wish to develop a practice environment that helps students learn how to reason data-informed and didactically.

The current issue

Teacher education students find it challenging to make meaningful use of data from dashboards and SMS when making pedagogical decisions. The difficulty lies not only in reading the data, but above all in selecting, analysing and interpreting relevant information and translating this into appropriate choices for differentiation and interventions in the classroom. We see that students frequently assume that data is objective and conclusive. Contextual factors such as the quality of instruction, the structure of a lesson, the differentiation choices made or the extended instruction provided are not yet sufficiently taken into account in the interpretation. This proves particularly complex when it comes to drawing conclusions.

The practical challenge

How can we implement an AI-supported dashboard-based practice environment that provides step-by-step support for teacher education students in developing data-driven pedagogical reasoning within math education?

Development goal

To develop a prototype of an AI-supported dashboard-based practice environment for teacher education students. They are able to practice within a realistic primary school setting (years 1 to 8) with selecting, analysing, interpreting and making meaningful use of dashboard and SMS-data in the context of math education. The environment supports students in developing data-driven pedagogical reasoning through:

  • Authentic dashboard and student data;
  • Lesson plans and information on the instructions provided;
  • Scenarios of increasing complexity;
  • An adaptive AI learning coach;
  • Feedback on reasoning and decision making.

Are we a match?

Is your organisation keen to work in co-creation with teachers and researchers to develop a new and responsible prototype for teacher education students? Then, we would love to hear from you! The following criteria will be taken into account when selecting a suitable development partner:

  • Experience of collaborating with primary education;
  • Experience of collaborating with academia;
  • Relevant experience regarding the creation of a practice environment and providing feedback within it;
  • Your motivation to work on this project.

About NOLAI

NOLAI is the national education lab AI for elementary, secondary and special needs education in the Netherlands. We are constantly gathering questions from teachers by organizing workshops throughout the country. These practical questions are the sole starting point for new co-creation projects in which a school, together with scientists and a company, researches and develops a prototype of educational AI. Over a three-year period the parties jointly progress through a concept, development and validation phase. NOLAI facilitates and funds the co-creation. The knowledge gained is shared as widely and openly as possible, to drive educational innovation.
