When and where?
From Monday 14 July to Sunday 10 August 2025, several buildings on campus will be closed. This applies to:
- Berchmanianum
- Grotius Building - more info
- Erasmus Building
- Elinor Ostrom Building
Sufficient (study) workplaces available
The Maria Montessori building will be open throughout the summer and sufficient workstations will be available there. Employees working on campus during the summer are welcome here.
Students can use the study workplaces in the Maria Montessori Building, the Huygens Building and the University Library.
Sustainable building use
This measure matches the low occupancy during the summer holidays and contributes to more sustainable use of the buildings. No lighting or cooling is needed in a closed building and facilities such as coffee machines and printers remain switched off. This saves energy and costs; also on cleaning and reception services.
Austerity measures
The decision to close a building for four weeks is part of the pilot project ‘Opening hours in line with use’. This pilot stems from the austerity measures the university is working on and runs until 2026. Campus & Facilities (C&F) is in charge of implementing the pilot, working closely with the faculties to ensure customisation and alignment within the organisation. Interim evaluations are used to shape policy for the coming years. The closure over the Christmas period resulted in savings of €55,000. C&F expects the savings from the summer closure to be greater because the closure period is longer and more buildings are closed.
Principles
The principles of the pilot ensure that the impact on students, staff and research remains minimal:
- Research and teaching are not affected by the closure
- Where necessary, alternative facilities or temporary measures are available
- A workplace is always available on campus. Where necessary, customisation is provided for business-critical processes or accessibility.
